Prop Firm Risk Rules Explained

Daily loss, max loss, trailing drawdown, profit target, consistency, and minimum days — what each prop-firm rule means in plain language, and the mistakes that quietly break them.

TL;DR: most prop accounts end on a loss rule, not a missing target. Understand the daily-loss and max-loss limits first, size so a normal losing streak can’t breach them, and treat targets as pace — not pressure.

Key takeaways

  • Most prop accounts end on a loss rule — the daily-loss or max-loss limit — not on a missed profit target.
  • The daily-loss limit caps a single day; the max-loss limit ends the account; trailing drawdown moves the max-loss level up as the account grows.
  • Consistency rules cap how much of total profit can come from one day; minimum trading days prevent all-or-nothing gambles.
  • Size every position so a normal losing streak cannot breach the daily-loss limit.

Daily loss

The most you can lose in one trading day, usually measured from the day’s starting balance or equity. Hit the daily-loss limit and the day — sometimes the account — is over. It’s the single most common reason evaluations fail.

Max loss

The total drawdown the account can take before it’s terminated, normally measured from the starting balance. Unlike the daily limit, breaching the max-loss limit ends the account outright.

Trailing drawdown

Watch the mechanics
Some firms trail the max-loss level up as your balance (or equity) grows, then freeze it once you reach a threshold. Trailing-drawdown rules are the easiest to misjudge — confirm whether yours trails on balance or equity, and exactly when it locks.

Profit target

The gain required to pass an evaluation phase. The profit target is a progress measure, not a breach — so pace toward it across sessions rather than forcing it in one oversized day.

Consistency

Many firms apply a consistency rule: no single day may make up too large a share of total profit. It rewards steady results over one lucky day; treat it as an advisory ceiling on any one session.

Minimum trading days

A floor on how many distinct days you must trade. It exists to prevent all-or-nothing gambles, so plan to spread activity rather than rush a pass.

Common mistakes that break the rules

  • Oversizing after a loss to “win it back” (revenge trading).
  • Trading without a stop and discovering the risk only afterward.
  • Ignoring how close the daily limit already is before a trade.
  • Chasing the profit target in a single risky session.

How Map.Trade helps review rule pressure

Import the account, enter your firm’s limits once, and the Prop Risk Monitor shows your remaining daily and max-loss buffers plus which behaviours pushed you toward a limit — before the next trade does it for you.

Frequently asked questions

What ends a prop account fastest?

Usually the daily-loss or max-loss rule, not a missed target — which is why loss control matters most.

Is trailing drawdown measured on balance or equity?

It depends on the firm. Confirm the exact mechanics with yours; Map.Trade approximates trailing rules conservatively.

What is a consistency rule?

A cap on how much of your total profit can come from a single day, encouraging steady results over one outsized session.

Does Map.Trade guarantee I pass?

No. It helps you review risk and behaviour. It gives no signals, no advice, and makes no performance guarantees — trading involves risk.
