Prop Trading Basics5

Challenge account

A prop challenge is an evaluation some firms run to decide whether to fund you. You usually trade an evaluation account and must hit a target while staying inside loss limits. Rules vary widely between firms.

Concept

A test of discipline, not luck

A challenge asks one question: can you hit a profit target without breaking the risk rules? The target gets the attention, but the rules — daily loss, max loss, consistency — are what actually pass or fail you.

Key takeaways
  • You usually trade an evaluation account, not real firm capital, at first.
  • Most failures come from breaking a rule, not from missing the target.
  • Read every rule before you start — they vary widely between firms.
